Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): The use of a specific lot of Bupivacaine injection has been suspended after seven women developed symptoms such as memory loss at the Government Gandhi Memorial Hospital, connected to Shyam Shah Government Medical College in Rewa.
The incident took place following Caesarean section deliveries, and women exhibited signs of delirium shortly after their procedures on Sunday. Fortunately, all seven women have recovered from the symptoms of memory loss.
Bupivacaine, a local anaesthetic, was administered in the operating theatre (OT) to numb areas of the body during surgery and childbirth. Medical superintendent of Gandhi Memorial HospitalDr Rahul Mishraconfirmed the suspension of the specific batch of medicine that had been administered to the women.
He said, “We have stopped the use of the particular lot of medicines given to women in the gynaecology department OT. These women developed memory loss, which is a concern for us. This particular combination of drugs is used regularly in many surgeries, but only these seven women developed such symptoms. We are investigating what went wrong.”
Dr. Mishra said that efforts are underway to determine the cause of memory loss. He said that both the medication administered during the C-section and the dosage of anaesthesia are being scrutinised.
“We suspect that it may be a reaction to the drug Bupivacaine, which is used in spinal anaesthesia. As a precaution, we have stopped using this drug at the hospital, and samples have been sent for pharmacovigilance testing in Kolkata,” he said.
