Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh): Investment proposals worth around Rs 50,000 crore are in the pipeline for Ujjain’s Vikram Udyogpuri, with Rs 5,000 crore worth of proposals already pending before the authorities.

However, a severe shortage of land has become a major roadblock to new industrial development. The Global Investors’ Summit (GIS) held in Bhopal last month yielded positive results for Ujjain, attracting significant investment interest.

However, the government faces challenges in acquiring land to accommodate these projects. A senior official from the Madhya Pradesh Industrial Development Corporation (MPIDC) stated, “Investment proposals worth Rs 50,000 crore were received for Vikram Udyogpuri, but acquiring sufficient land and developing necessary infrastructure remains a challenge.”

Currently, about 325 acres of land in Vikram Udyogpuri, located on the Ujjain-Dewas Road, is fully occupied. Forty-eight companies have begun setting up units, with some already starting manufacturing operations at an investment of Rs 2,000 crore.

Notable firms such as Volvo Eicher, LKM, Adani, Sun Pharma, Bericap, and Om Logistics have submitted proposals amounting to Rs 5,000 crore. However, an additional 488 hectares of land is required to accommodate these projects, while only 15 hectares of government land is currently available.

Additionally, one of the country’s four Medical Device Parks is being developed in Vikram Udyogpuri, but land scarcity is a pressing concern. South Korean company EDC recently announced an investment of Rs 207 crore to set up a cancer detection kit unit, and an MoU was signed during GIS with the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Ahmedabad, for technical support to the park. MPIDC officials are actively working to resolve the land crisis.

“We have sanctioned Rs 475 crore as compensation for acquiring 473 hectares to expand Vikram Udyogpuri,” said MPIDC Executive Director Rajesh Rathore. Efforts are also underway to develop a new industrial area in Kachnaria, located between Mahidpur and Nagda.

Additionally, Himadri Company has proposed a Rs 6,000 crore investment to establish a chemical unit on 400 acres. These initiatives highlight the urgent need for land to sustain Ujjain’s growing industrial aspirations.
