Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh): Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar has called BJP MP Varun Gandhi opinionated for saying that MLAs and MPs should “give up our pensions so that Agniveers get pension”.

The minister said the MP had a personal opinion on everything.

Last week Gandhi once again hit out at the Union government on the armed forces recruitment scheme, which has drawn severe criticism and resulted in violent protests across the country. Taking to Twitter on Friday, June 24, Gandhi wrote in Hindi: “If the Agniveers who serve for a short time are not eligible for pension, then why this ‘facility’ to public representatives… Can we, MLAs and MPs, not give up our pensions so that Agniveers get pension?”

“Great people and freedom fighters of India have often sacrificed their needs for the betterment of the country. Taking inspiration from their sacrifice, can't we all MPs reduce the burden of the government by sacrificing our pension? Can't we make the path of pension to the agniveers easy?”

The Pilibhit MP added that citizens had shunned the subsidy on LPG and at times contributed to the nation with the “swachhta” tax. “Can the nationalist MPs draw inspiration from the public and lessen the burden of the government?” he asked.
