Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh): Former Chief Minister and Rajya Sabha MP Digvijaya Singh launched a strong attack on the central government and BJP, alleging that the Election Commission is functioning like a wing of the ruling party.
Speaking to the media in Gwalior on Sunday, he said that the Commission’s duty is to ensure free and fair elections. However, it acts against opposition leaders making religious statements.
He also claimed that the Commission is refusing to share digital voter list data, despite several irregularities being reported.
Singh said his focus right now is on securing the voter list in digital form to conduct detailed surveys of each constituency. “This is about ensuring the Election Commission works impartially,” he stated.
On national security issues, Singh criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s handling of the Pulwama attack aftermath, saying that apart from Afghanistan, no other neighbouring country supported India during the operation.
He questioned why Pakistan was not elected as vice-president of a UN body and why India did not cast its vote. He also alleged lapses in security in Kashmir’s Pahalgam, where 4 terrorists attacked civilians based on religion.
Speaking at the ‘Mohabbat Ki Dukaan’ conference in Gwalior, Singh said that farmers have the right to live freely and emphasised that Sanatan Dharma is based on the principle of ‘live and let live.’
He expressed concern that religion is now being used for political gain, calling it a deviation from its true path.
‘Scindia is like my son’
In recent photos showing him sharing a stage with Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, Singh clarified that Scindia is ‘like a son’ to him, as he had worked closely with his father, the late Madhavrao Scindia.
He said it is not Congress tradition for everyone to sit on stage, which is why he usually sits with party workers. Referring to a private event in Bhopal where Scindia invited him on stage, Singh said the matter is being unnecessarily politicised.
He added that in the past, including during Rahul Gandhi’s tenure as Congress president, leaders would sit off stage and only come forward to speak when it was their turn. He believes this practice avoids unnecessary disputes over seating arrangements.
