Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): The occurrence of heavy rainfall has adversely affected the production of vegetables and their supply to local markets. In Bhopal, prices of vegetables have increased three to four times.

According to vegetable vendors in Bittan Market, the vegetables supplies are short of demand in the market. As a result, vendors are selling vegetables at inflated rates to customers.

Damaged roads and poor transportation networks make it difficult to move vegetables from farms to markets, further contributing to shortages and price rise.

The price of leafy green vegetables like spinach and coriander leaves have doubled as residents pay minimum Rs 10 to Rs 15 per bundle, up from Rs 5 earlier.

Mandi traders’ association president Harish Gyanchandani said, “Vehicles are moving at a snail’s pace due to heavy rainfall in several districts. There are traffic jams at many places. This has disrupted supplies and spiked costs. Secondly, farmers are busy sowing kharif crops. This has further affected the supply.”
