Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): The Bhopal Police has strengthened monitoring of the Merchant Refund Mechanism (MRM) and Grievance Redressal Mechanism (GRM) portals to speed up the recovery of money lost in cyber fraud and facilitate the removal of unnecessary holds on bank accounts.
Four Sub-Inspectors from the Crime Branch Cyber Cell have been appointed as zone-wise in-charges for the city.
They will regularly monitor pending cases, coordinate with police stations and assist in investigations related to cyber fraud.
The MRM system facilitates the recovery of money that has been traced and placed on hold in bank accounts following cyber fraud.
Under the prescribed procedure, victims can recover held funds of up to ₹50,000 after verification of the relevant documents and bank details.
Earlier, victims often had to undergo a lengthy process to recover money that had been frozen in different accounts.
The new monitoring mechanism aims to ensure that eligible cases are processed faster and the amount is returned to the victim within seven days.
The GRM portal, meanwhile, deals with bank accounts that have been frozen after receiving money linked to cyber fraud.
In some cases, account holders may have no connection with the crime but continue to face difficulties because of the hold placed on their accounts.
Under the GRM process, the account holder can approach the concerned police station or Cyber Cell and submit the required documents.
Police will examine the account transactions and investigate whether the account holder was involved in the fraud.
If no involvement is found, a report will be sent to the bank through the GRM portal for lifting the hold.
Additional DCP, Crime Branch, Shailendra Singh Chauhan said the newly appointed officers would review pending cases regularly and assist police stations in resolving issues related to refunds and account holds.
