Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Van Vihar National Park officials released another rescued migratory vulture of cinereous species into the Halali dam forest on Monday. It was rescued from Shajapur.

After its release, it reached Jaipur in Rajasthan. The officials came to know about its movement through geo-tagging device that has been fitted on it.

Van Vihar National Park director Vijay Kumar said the cinereous vulture was a migratory species that belongs to countries like Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. During intense cold, these vultures migrate to India where the weather is more bearable. At the onset of summer, they begin their return journey to Central Asia.

The rescue and release are being carried out by Vulture Conservation Breeding Centre, the Forest Department, Van Vihar National Park and the Bombay Natural History Society as part of the Rescue Vulture Release Programme.

Earlier release & death

On February 23, chief minister Mohan Yadav had released five rescued vultures into forest near the Halali dam area in Raisen. One of them was a long-billed vulture. A few days after its release, it reached Rajasthan and was found dead in a field there on March 22. The exact cause of death has not been ascertained.

Study for conservation

Van Vihar National Park is releasing rescued vultures into the wild to study their behavioural patterns, which may help frame better conservation programmes. Before release, the birds are fitted with geo-tags. The study of the released vultures will continue for one year.
