Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): An IVF and fertility centre under the department of obstetrics-gynaecology was inaugurated at AIIMS Bhopal on Monday. The Centre will provide facilities related to fertility evaluation, counselling and advanced treatment under one roof.

However, the treatment is not covered under Ayushman Yojana. At the Centre, the development of eggs and the process of ovulation in women will be monitored through ultrasound and hormonal assessment.

Medicines will be given to induce ovulation when required, and couples will be advised to try for conception at the appropriate time.

In suitable cases, the process of placing sperm inside the uterus will be carried out. This is called intrauterine insemination. Patients requiring more advanced treatment will have access to IVF services.

This includes preparing the ovaries with medicines, retrieving eggs, fertilising the eggs with sperm in the laboratory, developing embryos and transferring the embryos into the uterus.

In selected cases involving male-factor infertility or other medical indications, an advanced procedure in which sperm is directly injected into the egg will also be performed.

Embryos will be developed in a modern laboratory under controlled conditions and will undergo the required assessment.

When medically indicated, embryos, eggs and sperm can also be preserved for future use.

The Centre will also provide the facility to transfer previously preserved embryos into the uterus at a later stage. For this, the inner lining of the uterus will be prepared for embryo transfer.

The Centre will also provide evaluation and treatment for male infertility. Facilities for semen evaluation and preparation for assisted reproductive procedures will be available.
