World Milk Day is observed every year on June 1. This day highlight the importance of milk as a global food, celebrate the dairy sector’s contributions to economic development, nutrition, and livelihoods, and raise awareness about sustainable dairy practices.

History

World Milk Day was established by the FAO in 2001 to recognise the value of milk in healthy diets and to support the dairy industry’s role in feeding the global population. June 1 was chosen because many countries were already observing milk-related celebrations around this time. Over the years, the day has grown into a global movement, marked by campaigns, community events, and educational programs.

Interesting facts about milk

Milk contains all nine essential amino acids, along with proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins (like A, D, B12), and minerals (like calcium and potassium), making it one of the most complete natural foods.

People around the world also drink goat, sheep, buffalo, camel, and even yak milk. In some regions, these are more common like cow’s milk.

Milk is a top source of calcium and vitamin D, which are essential for strong bones and teeth. Regular consumption can help prevent osteoporosis.

Roughly 65 per cent of the global population has some degree of lactose intolerance, especially in Asia, Africa, and parts of South America.

UHT (Ultra-High Temperature) milk is treated at high temperatures to kill bacteria, allowing it to be stored unrefrigerated for months.

Celebrations

Numerous organisations, schools, and governments across the globe observe this day with awareness drives, seminars, online campaigns, and community milk distribution events. Social media is abuzz with hashtags like #WorldMilkDay to spread the message. World Milk Day serves as a reminder that milk is more than just a drink, it is a vital source of nutrition and a backbone of agricultural economies worldwide.
