World leaders react to attack on former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe

Abe was shot during a rally in the Nara region on July 8, Friday.

Former Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, was shot on July 8, while he was addressing a crowd in Nara prefecture. Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno, however, told reporters that condition of the longest-serving PM of Japan is unknown.

Meanwhile, Japanese police have identified the assailant. Tetsuya Yamagami, a former Maritime Self-Defence Force member, reportedly attacked Abe.

World leaders reacting to the attack on social media expressed that they are shocked and saddened.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reacting to the attack wrote that he is distressed.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi wrote that he was shocked to hear of the attack on former Prime Minister.

Former US President Donald Trump reportedly tweeted condemning the attack on his "true friend", Abe.

Rahm Emanuel, the US Ambassador to Japan stated that he was saddened by the attack on Abe.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the attack on Abe as well.
