New York: At least five people, including an off-duty New York City police officer and the shooter, were killed in a shooting at a midtown Manhattan office building on Monday, reported The Associated Press, citing sources. The assailant has been identified as Shane Tamura.
The assailant was also found dead by the police. The gunfire took place at 345 Park Avenue. New York Mayor Eric Adams also reached the spot and posted a video message from the scene.
"I have been on scene at the shooting in Midtown, and we can report the shooter is neutralized. The NYPD are now searching 345 Park Avenue carefully. If you are in the building, please stay where you are. People have been shot and injured, and I will soon be going to the hospital," Adams said in an X post.
Who Is Shane Tamura?
According to reports, Tamura is a native Las Vegas, a city in the US state of Nevada. He was 27 years old. Tamura is a former football player, reported The Hindustan Times. He was reportedly holding a concealed carry permit from Las Vegas. At around 6:30 p.m. on Monday (local time), Tamura barged into a skyscraper at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan.
He opened fire on the people present there. In the shooting, one police officer and three others were killed. Tamura was later found dead on the 33rd floor. He reportedly died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He reportedly graduated from high school in 2016. Tamura played football for Granada Hills.
The building where the shooting took place is located in a busy area of Midtown. It is situated at a short walk north of Grand Central Terminal and about a block east of St. Patrick's Cathedral.
