Kabul: A Taliban commander was arrested Monday in Afghanistan’s Saripul province, said police chief of the province.

“Acting on a tip-off, police raided a house in provincial capital Saripul city and captured Qari Sami in the early hours of Monday,” Noor Habib Gulbahari, provincial police chief, told Xinhua.

Qari Sami was the commander of Taliban military operations in Saripul province, Gulbahari said, adding Sami’s arrest would be a major setback for the Taliban militants in the province and adjoining areas.

The interior ministry also confirmed the arrest of Qari Sami, and said he was involved in subversive activities.
