Madrid: All major mobile networks in Spain, including Movistar, Orange, Vodafone and Digimobil, suffered an outage on Tuesday. Landline telephones were reportedly the worst affected in all major cities of the country. The Spanish Telecom crashed weeks after millions across Spain and Portugal faced a massive electricity outage.

As per local media reports, customers were unable to make calls, receive texts. They cannot even use their mobile data. Spain's telecom services crashed at around 5 am, as per DownDetector.

The blackout has also affected emergency service phone lines. The Europe-wide emergency number 112 also became unreachable in several parts of Spain.

Due to this emergency, service providers have to provide new telephone numbers.

"We have carried out some network upgrades that have affected specific services at some companies. We are working to resolve this," a Telefónica spokesperson said earlier this morning as quoted by The Independent.

Spain’s Ministry for Digital Transformation and Civil Service is monitoring the situation.

Netizens reaction:

Netizens took to X to raise their concerns.

One of the X users wrote, "What an absolute embarrassment for Spain and the EU! Another massive telecom outage hits Movistar, Orange, Vodafone, Digimobil, and O2—leaving millions disconnected on May 20, 2025. This isn’t just a "glitch"—it’s a glaring symptom of Spain’s crumbling infrastructure and the EU’s laughable energy policies. "

"Spain has just suffered a complete telecommunications blackout: Movistar, Orange, Vodafone, O2, and Digimobil have stopped operating down. No signal. No internet. Not even the 112 emergency lines," another X user wrote.

In April last year, Spain’s electrical grid stopped working for almost 23 hours in April this year. Domestic and international flight operations were also hit. Hundreds of flights were cancelled.
