Singapore authorities have raised alarms over the uptick in “sham marriages” or marriages of convenience between local men and foreign women, often linked to syndicates and potential social issues. "Sham marriages" typically involve foreign women compensating Singaporean men to facilitate unions, allowing them to secure permits for residency or employment in Singapore. The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) reported a significant rise, with 32 cases documented from January to September last year, up from just four in the same period of 2023.

Singapore Authorities Express Grave Concern

According to report by Hindustan Times, Inspector Mark Chai noted the risk these arrangements pose to Singapore's multi-ethnic society, especially if involved foreigners partake in illegal activities. Those caught in such scams face severe penalties, including hefty fines or imprisonment. The ICA encourages the public to report suspicious cases while assuring confidentiality for informants. In June 2024, 13 individuals were charged in connection with these sham marriages.
