Mumbai: Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed placing Ukraine under a temporary UN-backed administration to oversee elections and establish a "capable government" to initiate peace talks.

In remarks broadcast on television on Friday morning, Putin suggested that UN supervision would ensure a democratic process, leading to a government trusted by the Ukrainian people. He stated that once such a government was in place, Russia would engage in peace negotiations and sign internationally recognized, stable agreements.

Citing past UN involvement in East Timor, Papua New Guinea, and former Yugoslav regions, Putin argued that precedent exists for such an arrangement. He also suggested that discussions on implementing this plan could involve the United States, European nations, and Russia’s allies. However, the proposal was swiftly dismissed by a U.S. spokesperson, and the Kremlin later clarified that it was merely "one of the options" and had not been formally discussed with former U.S. President Donald Trump.

In a televised address, Putin reiterated that the goal was to facilitate democratic elections, establish a legitimate government, and then engage in peace talks. But Kyiv has rejected the idea, maintaining that it would agree to a 30-day ceasefire only if Moscow committed to it as well.
