Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to not visit Canada for the upcoming G7 summit amid strained ties between Ottawa and New Delhi. This marks the first occasion since 2019, when France hosted the summit, that Modi will not be in attendance at the summit of the world's most advanced economies.

The G7 summit is an informal grouping of the most industrialised economies in the world -- France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, Japan, the United States, and Canada. The summit is also attended by the European Union (EU), the IMF, the World Bank and the United Nations.

Canada is yet to officially released the names of the global leaders invited to the summit. However, Canadian media reports indicate that Ottawa has extended invitations to the leaders of Australia, Ukraine, South Africa, and Brazil.

Reportedly, India is yet to receive any official invitation for the summit, hosted by Canada from June 15-17, nor is the India inclined to attend, read reports citing sources, adding that the relationship between the two nations must improve before any such high-profile visit takes place.

Posting a newspaper cutting of the report, Congress' Shama Mohamed said on X, "Another masterstroke by @narendramodi! India hasn’t even been invited to the G7 meeting in Canada — a direct result of Modi and S. Jaishankar’s failed diplomacy (or should we say, hug-plomacy)."

Notably, Khalistani suppoters urged the Carney administration to refrain from inviting the Indian Prime Minister, citing India's alleged lack of cooperation in the ongoing investigations into the assassination of separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
