Israel on Friday, sought to debunk claims that it was weaponizing water to commit "acts of genocide" by denying clean water to Gaza. Israeli Unit for the Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories: Judea and Samaria and towards the Gaza Strip (COGAT) sought to highlight government actions in co-ordination with UNICEF towards providing water to Gaza residents.

In its post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) COGAT described how it co-ordinated repair of water desalination plant in Khan Younis, a city in Gaza.

The latest announcement has followed Human Rights Watch's accusation that Israel was committing "act of genocide" by denying water to Gaza residents. As per Al Jazeera, the Human Rights Watch has called on the international community to impose targeted sanctions.

Al Jazeera has reported that the The New York-based watchdog has said in its new 184-page report that Israeli authorities have 'deliberately obstructed Palestinians' access to the adequate amount of water required for survival in the Gaza Strip"

COGAT deemed the "libellous claim" and "egregious lie".

COGAT co-ordinated and maintains liaison with the Palestinian Authority and also functions as prominent source of information for the Palestinian sector. COGAT reports to Israel's Minister of Defense and to Major General of COGAT.

COGAT is responsible for coordination and liaison with the Palestinian Authority and serves as a major source of information for the Palestinian sector. The unit reports to Israel's Minister of Defence and to the Major General of COGAT, who is a member of the IDF's General Staff, as per the official website of the Government of Israel.
