Unemployment became a significant issue in 1930 following the stock market crash of 1929, which had a profound impact on economies around the world. After this drastic economic downturn, which negatively affected the growth of many countries, thousands of people took to the streets in major cities globally to protest against mass unemployment.
In Moscow, the Executive Committee of the Communist International (ECCI) proposed that March 6, 1930, be designated as an "International Day" of protest against unemployment. The coordinated events were initially scheduled for February 26, 1930. However, the date was too early and did not allow sufficient time for preparation which is why it was postponed to March 6.
The marches resulted in two deaths of protestors in Berlin, injuries at events in Vienna and the Basque city of Bilbao, and less violent outcomes in London and Sydney. This coordinated campaign of marches and demonstrations ultimately resulted in the establishment of International Unemployment Day.
