In what can be seen as an alarming development for South Korea's impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, the country's Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials (CIO) has said that the ousted president will be arrested within the court-stipulated dated of January 6. Last week, a court in Seoul issued an arrested warrant for Yoon Suk Yeol who tried imposing martial law in South Korea on December 3. The warrant is valid till January 6.

Oh Dong-woon, the chief of CIO was quoted by Al Jazeera. The CIO chief reportedly said that Yoon will be arrested 'within the valid period'.

"We aim for a smooth process without major disturbances, but we are also coordinating to mobilise police and personnel in preparation," he said, as quoted by Al Jazeera.

"We consider actions such as setting up various barricades and locking iron gates to resist the execution of our arrest warrant as obstruction of official duties," he added.

South Korea is currently in a political crisis. On December 3, President Yoon Suk Yeol unexpectedly declared martial law following which government security officials landed at the parliament and there even were clashes between security officials and lawmakers.

The lawmakers the locked doors from inside and passed motion against the martial law. Within hours, President Yoon had to lift the martial law and apologise to the nation.

On December 14, the parliament impeached President Yoon and later even removed his successor.

After impeachment, Yoon was suspended from the office.
