Washington DC: The "Gulf of Mexico" will be renamed the "Gulf of America" for Google Maps users in the U.S. following a name change ordered by the Trump Administration, announced on Monday.
This change aligns with President Donald Trump’s recent executive order altering the names of multiple American landmarks. The U.S. Department of the Interior confirmed these name changes, stating that America’s Geographic Names System is working swiftly to implement the order.
Google mentioned in their latest X post that they typically update names based on official government sources, and the new name will be displayed for U.S. users, while it will still be shown as "Gulf of Mexico" in Mexico. Users outside the two nations will see both names.
In addition to the Gulf name change, the Alaskan peak Denali, known as Mount McKinley since 1917 in honor of President William McKinley, has also been subject to renaming debates. It was renamed Denali during the Obama Administration in 2015. Trump's name changes arose from various executive actions shortly after he assumed office.
Previously, Google has faced challenges regarding naming conventions globally, such as labeling the body of water between Japan and South Korea and addressing disputes surrounding the term "Persian Gulf."
