Washington: US President Donald Trump on Thursday delivered a national address amid the ongoing conflict with Iran, claiming major military successes while uncertainty continues over a possible ceasefire. "Iran has been, essentially, decimated," said President Donald Trump in his address.
In his speech, Trump stated that Iran’s military capabilities had been majorly weakened. “Iran’s navy is gone, their air force is in ruins, its leaders, most of them terrorists, are now dead,” he said, projecting what he described as decisive battlefield gains.
He praised the US armed forces for delivering a “decisive” blow, crediting them with executing swift and effective operations in the conflict, which has now entered its fifth week. Trump said the campaign had significantly damaged Iran’s defence infrastructure and leadership.
Trump said the US is close to achieving its military goals and promises to finish the job soon. He blamed Iran for rising petrol prices, though critics argue those economic pressures stem from US and Israeli strikes. He insisted the US is well prepared to handle the war’s economic impact.
Trump Thanks Israel & Gulf
He also urged allies to take more responsibility for securing shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz, suggesting the US is less dependent on it, while praising partners like Israel and Gulf states and vowing to protect them.
Trump argued Iran’s attacks on regional countries show it should never obtain nuclear weapons. He criticised the nuclear deal negotiated under Barack Obama, calling it a mistake and saying he was proud to end it.
He highlighted a June 2025 strike, 'Operation Midnight Hammer,' claiming it destroyed Iran’s nuclear sites, but adds that Iran continued pursuing its program and was close to developing both long-range missiles and a nuclear weapon.
Trump Hails Artemis II Crew
The President began his address by congratulating NASA on the successful Artemis II mission, calling its crew “brave,” before turning his focus to the war.
Trump also made broader geopolitical remarks, stating that the United States is no longer dependent on Middle Eastern oil and is instead supporting its allies. He referenced an operation involving Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, claiming it had received global praise, and described improving ties between the two countries.
The address comes amid continued disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route that has seen restricted movement since the conflict escalated. The situation has contributed to rising crude prices and volatility in global markets.
Ahead of the speech, Trump claimed that Iran had indicated interest in a ceasefire. However, Iranian officials have not confirmed any such move and have instead signalled their willingness to continue fighting. Trump reiterated that any ceasefire would depend on the Strait of Hormuz being “open, free, and clear,” warning that military action would otherwise continue.
The conflict, involving the United States and its allies against Iran and associated groups, has led to sustained military exchanges across the region. While Trump projected confidence about the outcome, the situation remains fluid, with no clear timeline for de-escalation.
