According to reports, the Chinese-made F-7 aircraft belonging to the BAF crashed into the campus of Milestone School and College in Uttara. Among the deceased are 16 students, along with one teacher and the pilot.

Dhaka: At least 19 people have reportedly been killed and more than 100 others injured—83 of whom are currently receiving treatment in various hospitals across Dhaka—after a Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) trainer aircraft crashed near the capital on Monday, 21 July.

According to reports, the Chinese-made F-7 aircraft belonging to the BAF crashed into the campus of Milestone School and College in Uttara. Among the deceased are 16 students, along with two teachers and the pilot.

Many of the injured are said to be in critical condition, according to government. Disturbing visuals have emerged from the scene, showing the extent of the devastation, as rescue operations continue.

Crash Occurred During Class

The crash occurred when classes were ongoing. The aircraft took off at 13:06 (0706 GMT) teachers and staff of the institute carried out the initial rescue efforts before army and fire department reaching the spot. The plane crashed into the front side of a three-storey school building, leaving many students trapped inside.

Muhammad Yunus Reacts

Bangladesh chief adviser Muhammad Yunus has expressed grief over the tragedy and said the government would probe the cause of the accident and ensure all forms of assistance.

"The loss suffered by the Air Force, students, parents, teachers, and staff of Milestone School and College, as well as others, in this accident is irreparable. This is a moment of deep sorrow for the nation," he said. A national day of mourning has been declared for Tuesday.
