As Canadian PM Justin Trudeau Quits, Donald Trump Repeats Offer To Merge Canada And US

US President-Elect Donald Trump has spoken of merging US and Canada earlier as well. Trump's words are largely seen to be furthering his own agenda of making Canada reduce taxes and tariffs on US products. However, his statements have also been perceived as violating diplomatic propriety.

Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced plans to step down, and US President-Elect has renewed his offer of making Canada the 51st state of United States of America. In a post on TruthSocial, the social media platform that Trump owns, the president-elect said that if Canada joins USA, it will be a 'great nation'.

In the post Trump touched upon his issues with tariff Canada charges on American products and claimed that Trudeau stepped down because he realised that US can't suffer 'massive trade deficits and subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat'.

This is not the first time Trump has talked of making Canada the 51st state of the US. There have been times after he won US Presidential Election 2024 when he took to social media calling Canada a state of the US and even mocking PM Trudeau as 'governor' Trudeau.

Trump has long been a champion of reducing trade deficits with countries, many of them traditional allies of the US. He has also been vocal about taxes other countries impose on US products making them costlier in that country's domestic market. He has lashed out at India as well.

There was no answer to Trump's latest post from any major political leader in Canada by the time of publishing of this story.

Trudeau Steps Down

Canada PM Justin Trudeau announced his decision to step-down from prime ministerial post on January 6. He said that he would continue to perform his duties till Liberal Party chooses a new leader who would be the next prime minister of the country.

Trudeau has suspended functioning of the parliament till March 24. It is expected that a new leader would be chosen by the date.

Trudeau, at the helm of Canadian government for nearly ten years, has been facing calls from within his own party to resign. Even Liberal Party's coalition partners were not happy with Trudeau.

After Trudeau stepped down, New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh said he let Canadians down.
