Gunmen from the extremist group Islamic State attacked an army barracks in a mountainous region in the north of Baghdad on Thursday, killing 11 soldiers as they slept, Iraqi security officials said.
The officials said the attack took place in the Al-Azim district, an open area north of Baqouba in Diyala Province. The circumstances of the attack were not immediately clear, but two officials told the news agency Associated Press that Islamic State group militants entered the barracks at 3 am local time and shot dead the soldiers, Times of India reported
The official spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to issue official statements.
The deadly attack over 120 kilo meters north of the capital Baghdad was one of the most horrific targeting the Iraqi military in recent months.
