Justice Arun Kumar Mishra (Retd) takes over as the Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). However, he has already come under fire as citizens are registering dissent against him on social media.
Justice Mishra’s tenure at the Supreme Court is associated with numerous controversies, and the noticeable ones include the Judge Loya case and the Prashant Bhushan contempt of court case.
Last year, Justice Mishra became a talking point, when, as a sitting judge of the SC, he called PM Modi an “internationally acclaimed visionary who could think globally and act locally” at an international conference, The Wire reported.
On August 31, 2020, a Supreme Court Bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra had approved the granting of “compensatory tariffs” amounting to Rs 8,000 crore to Adani Power for electricity generated at its power plant in Rajasthan.
Today, Nitin Meshram, a Supreme Court Lawyer, has alleged that Justice Mishra is against human rights.
Meshram wrote a thread on Twitter to inform people about a case wherein he alleges that Mishra dismissed a case supporting the human rights of denotified, nomadic & semi-nomadic tribes (11 Crore people).
Meshram asked people to stop Mishra from becoming the Chief of NHRC since he believes that the former SC judge is against human rights.
Thus, Justice Arun Mishra and his appointment as the chief of NHRC has become quite the controversy on Twitter.
Here's how people are reacting.
