'Harbinger of Indian renaissance': Indians remember 'Sahitya Samrat' Bankim Chandra Chatterjee on his 183rd birth anniversary

Today marks the 183rd birth anniversary of the Bengali writer, poet, journalist and writer of India’s national song ‘Vande Mataram’, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee.

Popularly known as ‘Sahitya Samrat’ which means ‘Emperor of literature’ in Bengali, Chatterjee was the one who modernised Bengali literature. Our national song was taken from his novel ‘Anandamath’.

Today, various political leaders took to social media to remember the legendary poet on his birth anniversary.

Vice President of India, M. Venkaiah Naidu, wrote on Twitter, "Remembering the great Indian novelist & nationalist, #BankimChandraChatterjee on his birth anniversary today. He was a fearless journalist who infused the spirit of nationalism through his writings. His iconic song #VandeMataram will remain an eternal inspiration for every Indian."

Minister of Railways, Piyush Goyal remembered the legendary poet on his birth anniversary and wrote on Twitter, "Paying tribute to the Sahitya Samrat, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay on his birth anniversary. He penned our National song, Vande Mataram & was a key figure in the literary renaissance of India, awakening the spirit of nationalism & inspiring freedom fighters."

Not only political leaders, but people across India took to social media to honour Bankim Chandra Chatterjee on his birth anniversary.
