Heavy downpour has lashed parts of the New York City and northern New Jersey. The intense rainfall has prompted emergency alerts, evacuations and has caused widespread disruption. Several videos of the commuters stuck on their way and submerged subways are going viral on the Internet.

Flash flood warnings and watches were issued across New York, New Jersey, and surrounding areas as the downpour swept through the region.

CBS New York posted on X, "Photos taken from the Metro-North tracks in Hawthorne show severe flooding on the Saw Mill River Parkway. Multiple cars were even submerged during the evening commute."

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency late Monday. Taking to X, he posted, "I am declaring a State of Emergency given flash flooding and high levels of rainfall in parts of the state. Please stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Stay safe, New Jersey."

The New York City authorities warned residents, especially those living in basement apartments, to be prepared for sudden evacuations.

In a post on X, New York City Emergency Management posted, "If you live in a basement flat, stay alert. Flash flooding can happen with little warning, including overnight." "Keep a phone, torch, and Go Bag nearby. Be ready to move to higher ground," the authorities added.
