YC demo turns violent, 50 booked

Ujjain : Youth Congress (YC)-sponsored dharna and demonstration turned violent as the agitators and policemen indulged in minor clashes, here on Monday. Madhav Nagar police registered offences against about 50 workers, including MLA Jitu Patwari and MPYC chief Kunal Chaudhari for their acts.

The Lok Sabha unit of YC had organised the dharna programme at Shahid Park at 11 am and hundreds of workers and Congress leaders from across the district turned-up at the venue.

The one point demand through Monday’s agitation was to exert pressure on the police higher-ups to take immediate action against those policemen, who had resorted to lathi-charge the Kavad pilgrims on July 14 during Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan’s arrival at the Mahakaleshwar Temple. The YC leaders gave offensive speeches at the dharna site.

They were scheduled to reach the SP office on Police Control Room premises, but looking to their aggressive mood, CSP Vijay Davar, TI RK Singh and others tried to intercept them in the way. A number of policemen were also seen chasing the YC workers on the busy roads. The workers anyhow reached at the SP office and threw couple of barricades on the ground. They also tried to ride on the barricades and wall of the Control Room. Heated exchanges and jostling among  the protesters and police personnel were seen there.

During the demonstration and gherao of the SP office, kurta of MPYC chief got tore. The agitators had brought an audio system with them at the site and from there MLA Patwari and Chaudhari questioned SP Anurag Kumar. They asked him the reasons in the delay in the investigation. SP assured action after investigation, but they asked him to inform them the time limit. The YC leaders also warned no aggravate the agitation if guilty policemen were not suspended soon. Later, police booked Patwari, Chaudhari, YC Lok Sabha president Hemant Singh Chauhan, Zila Panchayat member Mahesh Patel, Surendra Marmat, Amit Sharma, Umesh Senger and 40-50 other persons under Section 147 and 341 of the IPC. Those present during 90 minute dharna and demonstration programme included District Congress Committee (urban) president Anant Narayan Meena, former MLA Ramlal Malviya, party leaders Rajendra Vasishtha, Yogesh Sharma, Jitendra Tilkar, Deepak Mahere among others.
