Its been seven years since the Ranes have been cut off from the Shiv Sena but they still seem to be taking inspiration from Sena supremo Bal Thackeray.
While the Ranes never leave any chance to hit out at the Sena, Nitesh Rane who has published consecutive alt39 corruptionalt39 calendars to expose the Sena, has taken a leaf out of Bal Thackerays book to attract Maharashtrian youth.
Unfazed by the debacle in the BMC polls where all three candidates of his Swabhimaan Sanghatna lost, Rane Jr is all set to come out with alt39 Yuvaalt39, a monthly magazine for Maharashtrian youth.
Whats interesting is that the magazine which will hit the stands next week is a leaf out of alt39 Marmikalt39, Bal Thackerays satirical cartoon weekly that created ripples in political circles in the 1960s and helped the Sena attract Maharashtrian youth in its formative years.
” Only the medium is the same as alt39 Marmikalt39 but a lot has changed since 1960 and now. From people to issues, everything has changed but Marathi youngsters are still facing a lot of problems and are still unaware about a lot of things. Yuva will occupy that space and raise the issues that matter to them,” says Nitesh who will edit the Marathi magazine himself.
Apart from social issues, political satire and cartoons on various issues and personalities is going to be Yuvas USP. Niteshs father and senior Congress minister Narayan Rane is also likely to write for Yuva.
” Through cartoons and aggressive editorials, Yuva will mirror the problems of the alt39 disturbedalt39 Marathi youth.
They have many questions but no answers.
Yuva will try to answer those questions and give them direction,” Nitesh adds.
Launched by Bal Thackeray in August 1960, Marmik meaning subtle in Marathi was used by Thackeray to address issues of the sons of the soils and hit out at migrants. Marmik is said to have played a pivotal role in Thackerays rise and the formation of his Shiv Sena. While Thackeray himself was an acclaimed cartoonist who lead the satire front at Marmik, who will step into the cartoonists shoes from the Ranes remains to be seen.
