Dismissing Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s fast as a "political gimmick", a group of activists today organised a counter fast here to protest the alleged &quo
t;misuse" of Gandhiji’s concept of satyagraha by the BJP leader.
"Gandhiji held a satyagraha for the nation, Modi is doing it for a selfish reason. He is misusing Gandhiji’s means of protest to fulfill his ambition of becoming the Prime Minister some day," alleged Faisal Khan of National Alliance of People’s Movements (NAPM).
Faisal was among 11 other activists who held the one-day fast at Rajghat in protest against Modi’s three-day fast for communal harmony in Ahmedabad.
"Modi is not eligible to fast for communal harmony. Ask him to respond to the victims of the 2002 riots first. He doesn’t have an answer, which is why protests against his fast were quelled," said Faisal.
The activist was alluding to the detention of Gujarat riot victims who were protesting against Modi’s fast in Ahmedabad yesterday.
"He says he is fasting for communal harmony but everyone knows his underlying intention. This is a political gimmick. He should know that just by cladding Khadi, one does not become a Gandhian," said Faisal.
