The panel discussion was chaired by former Director, Agriculture in MP Dr GS Kaushal, Principal Scientist in RKDF College Sehore Dr. Mohammad Yasin and executive director of the Indore- based Soybean Processors Association of India J S Pangaria.
Talking to the media persons J S Pangaria emphasised upon the need to transform agriculture from a sustainable occupation for farmers to a profitable venture and reversing the cycle of low productivity through use of modern technology.
Mohammad Yasin, principal scientist at the College of Agriculture, Sehore, said dissemination of information to farmers on new seed varieties was lacking leading to the perception that farmers are averse to using new seed varieties.
Dr Kaushal said Madhya Pradesh had the unique distinction of having 11 agro- climatic zones and the state can grow almost every crop barring tea.
This asset should be utilized to grow different crops and ensure the farmer gets a much better price for his produce.
He advised to the farmers in Madhya Pradesh not to harp on soybean alone, which is the major crop, year after year and instead try sowing of crops like corn, millet and different varieties of pulses where the returns are much higher and the yields are better.
Several other suggestions to bolster agriculture growth and thereby farmers prosperity were made during the lively interaction among experts at the discussion organized by IndoAsiancommodities.
