OUR BUREAU New Delhi Janata Party president Subramanian Swamys allegation about Home Minister P Chidambaram benefiting his businessman son Karti in a telecom deal triggered pandemonium and two adjournments in the Lok Sabha on Friday as an
irate Opposition wanted the Prime Minister to dismiss him immediately.
Neither the PM nor Chidambaram was in the House as the members created the ruckus, washing out the entire pre- lunch session. Dr Swamy is not a member of the House, but his party is now part of the BJP- led NDA and so his allegation was gripped by NDA convener Sharad Yadav and BJPs former finance minister Yashwant Sinha to lead an attack on the government for shielding the corrupt minister.
” Chidambaram has indulged in a massive corruption.
He should be dismissed as home minister immediately,” Sinha was heard shouting right from the start of the sitting while voices of Yadav and others were lost in the noise and din created by the members.
The ruckus was kicked off as soon as the House began with the question hour as the BJP, Janata Dal( U) and AIADMK members jumped into the well raising slogans.
Speaker Meira Kumar carried on the business in the din for half an hour before adjourning. The repeat of same scenario again at noon compelled her to adjourn till 2 pm. The post- lunch session was, however, not washed out since it was a day of the private membersalt39 business.
In the second protest, which was also joined by the left and the Samajwadi Party members, the Opposition members also raised slogans against the governments anti- farmer stances, besides demanding Chidambarams dismissal. The Rajya Sabha also witnessed noisy scenes as the BJPs M Venkaiah Naidu focused on the farmersalt39 plight and a new spurt of suicides.
The Opposition members were harping on Dr Swamys letter to the Prime Minister alleging Chidambarams hand in the money made by his son Karti in 2006 the sale of Aircel, a telecom firm, to the Malaysia- based Maxis during the tenure of then telecom minister Dayanidhi Maran. Chidambaram was then the finance minister.
