In what seems to be a major reshuffle within the Congress party, four senior ministers have written to party president Sonia Gandhi asking that they be relieved of their duties to look after party affairs, according to reports. The four include, rural development minister Jairam Ramesh, health and family welfare minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, law and justice and minority affairs minister Salman Khurshid and overseas Indian affairs minister Vyalar Ravi.

There could also be a major cabinet reshuffle post the Budget Session which ends on May 22, the same day when UPA II completes three years in power.

Sonia Gandhi is reportedly making such changes to strengthen the party following the initial report of the AK Antony Committee set-up to look into the party’s poor performance in the Assembly elections earlier this year. This, even at the cost of weakening the UPA II government.
