SAHIL SIDDIQUI SAYS THAT AMAZON DIGITAL LIBRARY IS VERY PROMISING.
Amazon is known for innovation and more notably updating itself for the changing trends. See the list of features seen on Amazon – discussions, tagging, ProductWiki
– and you will see my point. The projected latest advancement to this book- recommendation monster is a digital library ( similar to that of Netflix).
This news comes trailing the big ticket plans of launching an Apple iPad competitor tablet. Going by the success of the App Store we can only imagine the success expected of an online digital library that Amazon can whip up.
The proposed plan reads such – a two year subscription fee charged customers of Amazon Prime who pay $ 79 a year for unlimited two day shipping and for access to a digital library of movies and TV shows. An important point of consideration is if Amazon will limit the number of books that Amazon Prime customers could read for free every month.
Amazon has had a tight grasp on the digital market for some time; digital books outsell paperbacks regularly. There is however a fear among publishers from a business perspective. With sites like Project Gutenberg offering classic books for free download for free and public libraries being free, Amazon will have to be very convincing to make the move sound lucrative to publishers and users both.
At the moment its uncertain exactly how much interest there is among publishers and whether any have signed up to the program. Either way Amazon will be pushing this initiative over the coming weeks as it strives to dominate the ebook market.
Like every development in the proposed products space Amazons Digital library has been put through the skepticsalt39 lens as well. Some publishers have told the Wall Street Journal that Amazon plans are not feasible.
It will be interesting to monitor developments here in the coming months – Amazon trying to further reading and publisher profits and publishers holding back on the same.
