OUR STAFF REPORTER Indore Retired Justice Santosh Hegde has said democracy is the best choice for India but it can survive only when three pillars of it work within the ambit of the Constitution.

t a symposium organised jointly by Indore High Court Bar Association, Indore Bar Association and Indore Institute of Law in the memory of Shankarlal Bagdi at SGSITS auditorium on Sunday.

In his address, Hegde said after independence, the Constitution was drafted, which is now revered document of the country. The committee met for the first time on December 9, 1946 and continued to meet until January 24, 1950 and worked on drafting the Constitution.

The draft was finalised on November 26, 1949 and this day is observed as alt145 Law Dayalt39in the country.

Hegde further said that in laymans language democracy is a political process in which government is run by elected representatives.

This is also known as alt145 By the people, of the people and for the people.alt39The process has three main pillars i: e judiciary, executive and legislature and all three work within the ambit of the Constitution.

The drafters believed that this process would benefit the public and 63 years have passed since then the Constitution has faced many attacks and yet it has stood tall, he added.

However, Hegde said that many people do not believe that the Constitution is beneficial to them and therefore his subject of discussion would be alt145 Now what is left in the Indian Constitution.alt39Shedding light on the above subject, Hegde said that although there are three pillars of democracy, according to him the fourth pillar, press is very important.

It has larger role to play. Hegde further said that that democracy is the best form of governance, but it can survive only when three pillars work within the Constitution. Hegde said that he was an optimistic person and therefore despite drawbacks, he still sees bright future for India.

Advocate Yogesh Pratap Singh, who fought legal battles in respect of Adarsh Society, Lawasa Hill City and Hiranandani Gardens in Mumbai, noted social worker Medha Patkar of Narmada Bachao Andolan also addressed the gathering. The programme was kicked off by senior advocate Satishchandra Bagadia, who gave details of the subject matter of symposium.
