Buy in India?

So, should you buy your cassette in India or overseas? The Economic Times has some good tips on this one. For instance:

* Apart from the shady practice of buying used iPhones that have been illegally unlocked — even the prices of officially unlocked devices can differ.  For instance, the iPhone 6 starts at Rs 56,000 in India.  The same unlocked device in the US is $649 ($40,000) and HK$5588 ($45,000) in Hong Kong.

* The catch is that iPhone warranties are only valid in the country in which they are purchased.  If the phone develops any sort of issue, Apple service will not accept the product at all — even if payment for repairs is offered.

In cameras, with some mid-range and premium digital SLRs, “the price gap starts to widen”.  Some high-end laptop can be well priced abroad.  See the evaluation of buying projectors here or overseas.

Power waste

Are you one of those concerned about the wastage of power in the form of street lighting?

Says the TERI (The Energy and Research Institute): “Traditionally, city street lighting in India has not been designed, operated or maintained very efficiently.  As a result, the energy consumption for city street lighting in India is very high.”

The good news is that experiments in Pune have helped to reduce needless power wastage. Using computer simulation tools, the schemes were designed to meet the lighting requirements as per Indian standards.  The next stage was to organise a manufacturer’s meeting at PMC.  Manufacturers of lighting fixtures were invited and briefed about the project and information about the most efficient fixtures and controls was shared. After deciding which technology should be used, the necessary equipment was procured and installed. See details here: http://bit.ly/pune-streetlights
