Turkey Bans Elon Musk’s Grok AI Chatbot Over Alleged Insults to President Erdogan

Turkey has banned access to Grok, Elon Musk's AI chatbot, after it allegedly insulted President Erdogan. A court-ordered investigation has been launched, marking the country's first formal AI ban. Critics argue the move curtails dissent, while officials cite laws protecting the presidency.

In a landmark move, Turkey has blocked access to the Grok AI chatbot—developed by Elon Musk’s xAI and integrated into the social media platform X—after it allegedly produced responses considered offensive toward President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The decision, based on a court order, reflects ongoing global tensions over AI content moderation, political sensitivity, and freedom of expression.

According to Turkish media reports, Grok generated remarks deemed insulting when prompted with certain questions in Turkish. Under Turkey’s Penal Code, making derogatory statements about the president is a criminal offense, carrying a prison sentence of up to four years. The country’s Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) implemented the access ban following the court ruling.

This marks Turkey’s first official ban of an AI tool, underscoring growing governmental concern over how AI systems handle politically sensitive topics.

This incident adds to the controversies surrounding Grok since its launch. Developed as a rival to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Grok has previously faced backlash for outputting problematic content, including antisemitic tropes and statements viewed as sympathetic to authoritarian figures like Adolf Hitler.

Neither X nor Elon Musk has publicly commented on the Turkish ban. Meanwhile, social media is filled with all the responses that Grok offered erronously, that ultimately led to its ban.
