As global interest in rural internet connectivity grows, India-based Sterlite Technologies (STL) may emerge as a crucial infrastructure ally for Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet venture. With over 150,000 km of optical fiber deployed and several government-backed rural broadband projects under its belt, STL is well positioned to support satellite operators seeking local network integration and ground infrastructure access.

What is Sterlite Technologies?

Sterlite Technologies Limited (STL), a part of the Vedanta Group, was founded in 2000 as an offshoot of Sterlite Industries to focus on telecom and data network solutions. Initially known for manufacturing optical fiber cables, STL has since evolved into a global provider of end-to-end digital network solutions, including fiber optics, software, network design, and deployment services.

Headquartered in Pune, the company has played a key role in India’s major connectivity initiatives like BharatNet, MahaNet, and Network for Spectrum, while also expanding its presence in global markets such as Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas through innovation and strategic acquisitions.

Sterlite Technologies (STL) has achieved several major milestones that underscore its leadership in digital infrastructure. Key wins include the ₹2,631 crore BharatNet Phase-III project in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, the MahaNet project in Maharashtra, and the T-Fiber initiative in Telangana, connecting thousands of rural areas with high-speed fiber. STL also executed the Network for Spectrum project for the Indian Armed Forces, laying over 10,000 km of secure optical fiber.

What is Starlink?

Starlink, a satellite internet project under Elon Musk’s SpaceX, aims to provide high-speed broadband globally. Operating through a low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation, Starlink delivers internet directly to user terminals without the need for traditional wired infrastructure. In India, where last-mile connectivity is still a challenge in rural and hilly regions, Starlink offers a promising solution by bypassing physical limitations with space-based delivery. Starlink is expected to enter into the Indian market by the end of this year or early 2026.

How can STL help Starlink?

While Starlink manages the satellite-based last-mile link, it requires ground infrastructure to link satellite signals to the broader internet backbone. This is where Sterlite Technologies becomes relevant. As a fiber optic infrastructure leader in India and a key participant in the BharatNet programme, STL has deployed extensive fiber networks across tier-2 to tier-6 cities and regions like Jammu & Kashmir and the Northeast. This makes STL a potential backhaul partner for Starlink, connecting its satellite gateways to core data networks. STL’s recent ₹2,631 crore contract from BSNL for BharatNet Phase-III further solidifies its capabilities in complex geographies.

Additionally, Sterlite’s longstanding relationships with government agencies and public sector undertakings could help streamline regulatory and deployment challenges for foreign operators like Starlink. With STL also providing passive telecom hardware and network management solutions, it can support Starlink’s deployment with reliable local components and ground support.

Starlink can benefit from Sterlite Technologies in fiber backhaul, local deployment partnerships, network co-design, hardware provisioning, and government contracting.
