A Chinese-developed device that uses lasers to detect and eliminate mosquitoes has moved into mass production, with the first units set to reach buyers before the end of August, developer Photon Matrix Lab said in an update on crowdfunding platform Indiegogo.
How the device works?
The portable unit, built by Changzhou-based Photon Matrix Lab, combines LiDAR, millimeter-wave radar and AI-powered computer vision to spot mosquitoes and similarly sized flying insects, then fires a precision laser to eliminate them mid-air. The company has confirmed that production began this month and has opened an official online store selling both infrared and blue-laser versions of the device directly to consumers.
The launch arrives as China's anti-mosquito industry expands rapidly. Xinhua reports that Jinhua city in Zhejiang province alone exported mosquito-repellent goods worth more than 45 million yuan (roughly $6.7 million) in the first half of 2025, a jump of 65.1 percent from the previous year. Industry estimates cited by Xinhua peg the broader mosquito-control market at 7.86 billion yuan in 2025, with projections to nearly double to 12.43 billion yuan by 2030.
Automation is the new frontier
Beyond conventional coils, vaporizers and traps, Chinese firms have increasingly turned to automated solutions. China Daily reported that an automated mosquito trapper was deployed at the Asian Games Village during the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, luring insects by simulating human body heat and breathing before capturing or destroying them. A separate report on the Games described robots that used carbon dioxide and ultraviolet light as attractants.
How it compares to rival tech
Similar detection-based systems are emerging outside China as well. Israeli company Bzigo sells the Iris, a device priced at $299 that uses computer vision and infrared sensors to locate mosquitoes and flag their position with a low-intensity laser — but stops short of killing the insect, leaving elimination to the user. Photon Matrix takes the opposite approach, using its laser as the final step to physically destroy the target rather than merely locate it. The two products effectively serve different needs: one prioritizes faster detection, the other full automation of the kill process.
Unanswered questions remain
Photon Matrix's claimed performance figures have not yet been independently verified, and the company has said further testing and safety data will be released in due course. CGTN noted that broader adoption will likely hinge on factors such as proven effectiveness, safety, reliability and price. For now, the shift to mass production adds a new technology-driven option to an already established mosquito-control market rather than displacing existing methods.
