Apple is reportedly working on its own version of a ChatGPT. Analyst Mark Gurman’s latest report suggests that the tech giant is forming a new team, reportedly called the Answers, Knowledge, and Information, to build a homegrown AI chatbot. This is a full u-turn from Apple’s stance last year, wherein the company’s top software executives dismissed the need for an in-house chatbot, claiming that ‘the interest is limited’.
Gurman reports that Apple is decidedly falling behind in artificial intelligence, and some leaders even have shown skepticism of integrating ChatGPT into its own services. For instance, Apple integrated ChatGPT into Siri, to allow users to access AI-features without building a product in-house. However, with privacy concerns surrounding the OpenAI platform, Apple may have wanted to take the route of building its own ‘answer engine’.

According to Gurman, this new ‘answers engine’ or ChatGPT-like platform that Apple is building, could be a standalone app. It could likely provide search capabilities in Siri, Safari, and other Apple products. The tech giant is also actively hiring for this team, as seen in recent job listings. Apple is specifically looking for applicants with experience in search algorithms and engine development.
This puts Apple in the AI race, wherein tech giants are mulling to rope in AI talent for insane amounts of money. Metal has been growing its Super Intelligence Labs with top AI recruits paying them upwards of $100 million in a multi-year deal. Whether Apple will get aggressive with its recruiting or not, remains to be seen.
