The Women's Premier League (WPL) 2025 has introduced a new rule change regarding zing bails after a controversy erupted during the match between Delhi Capitals (DC) and Mumbai Indians (MI). According to the latest rule, the LED bail has to be fully dislodged for umpires to declare a batter out in run-outs and stumpings.
According to Appendix D of the WPL 2025 rules, it states that, "Where LED wickets are used, the moment at which the wicket has been put down shall be deemed to be the first frame in which the LED lights are illuminated, and subsequent frames show the bail permanently removed from the top of the stumps."
The rule change was reportedly triggered by the discovery that the zing bails were overly sensitive, lighting up even when barely disturbed. In some cases, the bails would flash even if only one spigot was slightly lifted from its groove, rather than being fully dislodged.
The new rule change aims to clarify the ambiguity surrounding the use of zing bails in the WPL. The rule change has been made to ensure that the umpires make accurate decisions, and the game is fair and transparent.
