Alexander Isak received a hostile welcome from Newcastle United fans as he returned to St James' Park with Liverpool for their Premier League clash. A video of his welcome by the opposing fans is being widely shared on social media.

The Swedish striker was greeted with loud boos and chants of "rat" as the Liverpool squad arrived at the stadium. It was Isak's first return to the Newcastle ground since his controversial move to Liverpool.

Isak's Unpopular Return

Isak was a fan favourite during his three seasons at Newcastle. He scored 62 goals in 109 appearances across all competitions and became one of the club's biggest stars.

However, his relationship with the Newcastle supporters changed after his move to Liverpool. Isak had refused to train or play for Newcastle and claimed the club had broken promises made to him.

He eventually completed a reported £125 million move to Liverpool, bringing his time at Newcastle to an unhappy end.

The reaction at St James' Park showed that many Newcastle fans have not forgotten how the transfer played out.

Newcastle Boss Plays Down Isak Return

Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle said before the game that Isak remains a quality footballer but stressed that his team would focus on the match.

He also called on Newcastle supporters to back their own players rather than focus on Isak.

Isak Looking To Rebuild At Liverpool

Isak's first season at Liverpool was difficult. He scored only four goals in 22 games before an ankle injury ended his campaign in December.

However, Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola has backed the striker to return to his best.

Iraola said Isak has been training regularly and increasing his playing time during friendly matches. He also believes that the striker can play an important role for Liverpool this season.

With the hostile reception at St James' Park now behind him, Isak will hope his performances on the pitch can do the talking as he looks to make a strong impact at Liverpool.
