Somerset cricketer Tom Banton strode onto the pitch in excitement despite being in crutches as they clinched a comprehensive win over Surrey in the County Championship Division one fixture on Thursday. In a video that went viral on social media, the 25-year-old embraced his teammate, while the opposition player Kemar Roach also congratulated him.
The right-handed batter had underwent X-ray amid Surrey's first innings at the County Championship division one. Although Banton was cleared of ankle break, the youngster will still undergo an MRI scan to know the extent of the damage. He batted with a runner and scored an important 46 off 65 deliveries.
As far as Somerset's win was concerned, a staggering seven wickets fell in the final hour of play as Archie Vaughan and Jack Leach snared five wickets each. Surrey, set 221 to win, could manage only 109 in reply.
"Four-day wins are some of the most pleasing you have as a cricketer because you work so hard for them" - Lewis Gregory
Somerset skipper Lewis Gregory lauded Leach and Vaughan for constantly staying in the game despite some periods of play where nothing seem to be happening. He said, as quoted by ESPN Cricinfo:
"It was a crazy hour at the end. There were periods when not much happened, but the lads hung in there and Jack Leach and Archie Vaughan were fantastic the whole game. To get a win with only a couple of minutes left in the match was very special. Four-day wins are some of the most pleasing you have as a cricketer because you work so hard for them."
