New York: Frenchman Gael Monfils upset seventh seed Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov to reach the US Open quarter-finals on Tuesday. He will now face 17-time Grand Slam champion and Swiss Roger Federer.

The Frenchman, seeded 20th, won 7-5 7-6 (8-6) 7-5 – his first victory in the main Arthur Ashe Stadium. Federer also entered the quarter finals after knocking over Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4 6-3 6-2, reports the BBC.

It was a disappointing performance from Dimitrov, who made 38 unforced errors and was broken three times, double-faulting on match point.

On facing the theatrical Frenchman Monfils in the quarter-finals, Federer described the former as one of the most exciting and entertaining opponents on the international tennis circuit.
