Mumbai: Defending champion Sportspower, from USA will enthrall basketball lovers in Mumbai with their skills once again, having confirmed participation in the 9th Savio Cup Basketball Tournament, being organised by the Don Bosco Recreation Centre, at the school campus in Matunga from January 11 to 18, 2014.
Sportspower will face opposition from India’s best hoopsters, representing team like ONGC, Income Tax, Maharashtra, IOB, Punjab and Services, the other men’s teams in the fray.The four-team women’s category includes Southern Railway, Maharashtra, Chattisgarh and Kerala.
One of the premier basketball events in the country, the Savio Cup is being sponsored by United Phosphorous. Tridhaatu Realty, Indian Oil and Elevate Sports and will be played on state-of-the-art Terraflex courts and under floodlights in a specially erected stadium.
As always, the competition shall feature a host of international/India stars including Vishesh Bhriguvanshi, Riyazuddin and Yadwinder from ONGC; Mihir Pandey and Abhilek Paul from Tamil Nadu; Anitha Pauldurai from Southern Railway; Anju Lakra and Poonam Chaturvedi from Chattisgarh, as well as some rising stars and experienced players like Shireen Limaye and Manisha Dange from Maharashtra.
The tournament shall be played on round robin basis in both the Men’s and Women’s sections to sustain a competitive spirit throughout the tournament. Following the round robin league the top two teams shall qualify for the final. The total prize money amounts to almost Rs 4 lakhs and in addition to the Winners’ purse, there shall be the ‘Player of the Tournament’ awards in the Men’s and Women’s categories for exemplary performance throughout the tournament.
