Pant’s 63 not out was the highlight of an engrossing opening session as India strengthened their position after Sri Lanka struck early. The wicketkeeper-batter showed remarkable composure despite being repeatedly targeted by the Sri Lankan pacers.
Sri Lanka made an immediate breakthrough when Asitha Fernando dismissed debutant Saransh Jain for six, leaving India at 307 for six. With India still looking to build a substantial lead, Pant walked out to bat after retiring hurt on three on the opening day following a blow to his forearm from Lahiru Kumara. There were concerns over his fitness, but Pant quickly put those doubts to rest with a determined knock.
Fernando and Kumara unleashed a barrage of short deliveries, repeatedly testing Pant’s injured arm and upper body. Fernando even struck Pant on the shoulder, but the left-hander remained unfazed and continued to find ways to deal with the hostile bowling. He either moved away from the line of the ball or cleverly nudged it into gaps to keep the scoreboard moving.
Pant also produced moments of attacking brilliance during his stay at the crease. He got inside the line of a Kumara delivery and hooked it over fine leg for a six, underlining his confidence despite the sustained barrage of bouncers. His ability to combine aggression with caution kept India firmly in control of the session.
Pant’s unbeaten 63 came after his impressive 66 in the second innings of the first Test at Galle. His latest effort once again showcased his ability to battle through difficult circumstances and deliver when India needed him most. With India at 419 for six, Pant’s resilience had given the visitors a strong platform to push for a commanding first-innings total.
