AB De Villiers Enjoys Wheelchair Cricket With Mumbai Team During Practice Session At Islam Gymkhana; Video

De Villiers was in Mumbai as a part of Project Mumbai, spending an entire day volunteering across the city, aiming to ignite a spirit of civic engagement.

Former South African cricket legend AB de Villiers shared a special moment with the Mumbai Wheelchair Cricket Team during a practice session at Islam Gymkhana, Marine Lines as a prt of Project Mumbai initiative. In a heartwarming gesture, de Villiers not only interacted with the players but also sat in a wheelchair himself to play alongside them, fully immersing himself in the experience. The practice was filled with energy, laughter, and mutual respect as de Villiers applauded the determination and skill of the wheelchair athletes.

AB de Villiers Project Mumbai Initiative

De Villiers will spend an entire day volunteering across the city, aiming to ignite a spirit of civic engagement. Besides playing wheelchair cricket, de Villiers will visit a BMC municipal school in Malabar Hill, picking up a paintbrush to help transform classrooms into vibrant, welcoming spaces. This initiative was part of Project Mumbai’s SATRANG program, which fosters civic pride and community participation through public space beautification.

The former South African cricketer will concluded his visit at the CSSC Centre, where AB engaged with underprivileged children in a paper bag-making workshop.

De Villiers, who serves as Project Mumbai’s Brand Champion, said,"Mumbai has given me so much love over the years. Today, I wanted to give back not as a cricketer, but as a volunteer. There’s something truly powerful about working with others to make spaces better for children, for families, and for this incredible city."

On Royal Challengers Bengaluru progressing into the finals of IPL 2025 after beating Punjab Kings on Thursday. De Villiers who played for RCB is confident of the team lifting their maiden title this year. Speaking about the same he said, "I am very happy that RCB is in the final. Mumbai Indians won last night and it is going to be a very good qualifier 2...I am very much looking forward to the finals and hopefully this will be the year for RCB"

Royal Challengers Bengaluru qualified for its fourth Indian Premier League (IPL) final, and its first since 2016. RCB, which lost the IPL 2016 final to Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight runs, reached the summit clash in 2009 and 2011 too, losing to Deccan Chargers and Chennai Super Kings, respectively. RCB now awaits the winner of Qualifier 2 between Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings. The final will be held on Tuesday ,June 3 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
