Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra began his preparation for 2025 season on a strong note, registering a solid 84.52m throw to win gold at the Potch Invitational Track meet in Potchefstroom, South Africa, on Wednesday.

Competing in a six-man field, Chopra’s performance was the best of the event, finishing ahead of South Africa’s Douw Smit, who managed a best effort of 82.44m. Only Chopra and Smit crossed the 80m mark, with the third-best throw coming from Duncan Robertson at 71.22m.

Though his season opener was below his personal best of 89.94m, Chopra looked in good rhythm as he began preparations for a packed year in the global athletics calendar. His next major appearance will be at the Doha Diamond League on May 16

This season also marks a shift in Chopra’s training setup, as he has moved on from long-time coach Klaus Bartonietz and is now working under javelin great Jan Zelezny.

Speaking about the upcoming Doha event Neeraj said, “I know the fans expect big things from me when I compete (in Doha) - and with good conditions and a great atmosphere that’s definitely possible - but I pride myself on my consistency, which I believe is one of my greatest strengths. For me, that’s more important than just chasing a number.”

He added, “Last year taught me a lot but I was proud to be on the podium for India once again at the Olympic Games. I’m now fully fit and really enjoying the hard work that Jan Zelezny and I are putting in,”

Following Diamond League, Chopra will also be in action at the Neeraj Chopra Classic in Haryana on May 24, a World Athletics ‘A’ category event hosted in his name.
