The Boston Celtics, one of the most iconic franchises in sports history, are set to change hands in a record-breaking $6.1 billion (approx.₹53,358 crore) sale, unanimously approved by the NBA Board of Governors. The sale is the second-largest sale price for a US sports franchise, behind the $10 billion valuation (approx ₹83,000 crore) for the Los Angeles Lakers when Mark Walter purchased that team in June.

The new ownership group will be led by Massachusetts native Bill Chisholm, who will succeed Wyc Grousbeck as the team’s governor. First agreed upon in March, the deal is anticipated to close shortly, making it one of the most costly transactions in American sports history.

Boston Celtics sale approved by NBA

In July, Boston Basketball Partners LLC announced that it would sell the team in two stages, with current governor and CEO Wyc Grousbeck remaining in charge through the 2027–2028 campaign. However, governors are required to own at least 15% of the company under NBA ownership regulations.

Chisholm will now take over as governor right away since Grousbeck's share will drop below that amount. According to ESPN, both men "plan to run the team together as originally planned" in spite of the change. Sixth Street Partners, Bruce Beal Jr., president of Related Companies, and current Celtics co-owner Rob Hale are also part of the investor group.

Chisholm, a managing partner and co-founder of Symphony Technology Group defeated at least two other bidders, including Steve Pagliuca, a former Celtics minority partner
