'It's Very Unfortunate': BCCI Blasts Shama Mohamed For Fat-Shaming Rohit Sharma Ahead Of CT 2025 Semi-Final Says Report

Mohamed in her response said "It was a generic tweet about the fitness of a sportsperson. It was not body-shaming. I always believed a sportsperson should be fit, and I felt he was a bit overweight, so I just tweeted about that."

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) responded to the controversial remarks made by Congress leader, Dr. Shama Mohamed, about Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma. Speaking to ANI BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia called the remarks 'unfortunate',.

Saikia said, "It's very unfortunate this kind of remarks come from such a person who is on a responsible post to our captain, on a meanwhile time when India is playing an ICC tournament and the team is all set to play Semi final"

Shama had earlier written in her now deleted post on X (formerly Twitter): "@ImRo45 is fat for a sportsman! Need to lose weight! And, of course, the most unimpressive captain India has ever had."

Her tweet gained sharp reaction with BJP slamming her for her comments. However defending her post, Mohamed while speaking to ANI said, "It was a generic tweet about the fitness of a sportsperson. It was not body-shaming. I always believed a sportsperson should be fit, and I felt he was a bit overweight, so I just tweeted about that. I have been attacked for no reason. When I compared him with previous captains, I put in a statement. I have the right. What is wrong in saying? It is a democracy..."

Congress asking Mohamed to delete posts

Congress leader Pawan Khera, in his X post, said that the views of Mohamed do not reflect the party's position. The Congress also asked Mohamed to delete her controversial posts.

Khera wrote, "Shama Mohammed, National Spokesperson of the Indian National Congress, made certain remarks about a cricketing legend that do not reflect the party's position. She has been asked to delete the concerned social media posts from X and has been advised to exercise greater caution in the future,"

At present, Rohit Sharma is with the Indian team in Dubai for the ICC Champions Trophy. The team has already qualified for the semi-finals of the event without losing a single match. The Men In Blue will square off against Australia in repeat of 2023 ODI World Cup final.
